THE RAVEN - Stillwater, Minnesota
Photos by Taylor Hall O'Brien

PROJECT

THE RAVEN

Rich with symbolism and stoic in demeanor, The Raven with its dignified silhouette and striking black plumage stands apart from its surroundings. That same spirit of contrast drives the redesign of this rustic log cabin: light against dark, sculptural moments against rough-hewn beams, refined modern furnishings introduced without erasing the bones of the original structure. The result celebrates the cabin's rustic origins while giving it more mystical voice.

Project Type: Cabin Remodel & Furnishings
Location: {CITY} Minnesota
Services: Interior Design, Furnishings, Procurement, Styling
The Brief: Introduce a sleek, elegant layer of design into a rustic log cabin without letting go of its rough, warm architectural character.

CONCEPT

SLEEK PLUMAGE w/ QUIET ELEGANCE

There's something striking about the sleek, almost iridescent black of the raven's feathers. Inspiration for a clean, refined kitchen set against rough, warm beams of the living space. Elsewhere, the cabin is allowed to tell its own story, with layers introduced carefully: the fireplace refined with new metalwork and a modern hearth, but never so much that it erases the old tale entirely.

Quiet elegance means choosing pieces that are refined, with an emphasis on luxury without abundance. A cleaned-up, more sophisticated version of the cabin that still celebrates the rustic surroundings and origins of the structure itself.

Image: Publicity still believed to depict actress Tippi Hedren with a trained raven, associated with Alfred Hitchcock's film The Birds, circa 1962–1963.

“The monolithic black kitchen set within the wrap of the hand-hewn logs is one of my favorite moments,” Sass says. “How do you hold your own against something with a perspective as strong as log or timber construction?”

“You have to march decisively in the other direction.”
